The affected tissue is removed layer by layer rather than via a more aggressive excision. The cure rate and safety of the procedure, along with the ability to remove much less skin and tissue, makes Mohs surgery far superior for facial skin cancers, recurring skin cancers, or larger skin cancers with undefined margins. Every layer of skin removed is examined under a microscope to ensure no cancerous cells remain.
